Two Waterfront Destinations, Two Celebrations Saturday, December 7, 2019
Washington, D.C.—Spectators on both sides of the Potomac River will gather to enjoy a beloved holiday tradition on Saturday, December 7, 2019. Alexandria, Virginia, and The Wharf in Washington, D.C., present parades of illuminated boats back-to-back on the same evening, along with dockside festivities to celebrate the season. The 20th Anniversary Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights begins at 5:30 p.m. in Old Town with activities from 2 to 8 p.m. at the newly expanded Waterfront Park at the foot of King Street. On Washington, D.C.’s waterfront, The District’s Holiday Boat Parade kicks off at The Wharf at 7 p.m., led by the DC Fireboat John Glenn. The Wharf will present a stunning fireworks salute to the holiday parade at approximately 8 p.m. The Wharf’s landside festivities take place from 6 to 9 p.m. all along the new waterfront neighborhood.
Old Town Alexandria’s historic waterfront will shine for the 20th Anniversary Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights at 5:30 p.m. as dozens of brightly lit boats cruise along one mile of the Potomac River shoreline. Enjoy dockside festivities from 2 to 8 p.m. in the newly expanded Waterfront Park at the foot of King Street which offers a transformed riverside experience seamlessly connected to Old Town’s historic retail corridor. Festivities include a pop-up beer garden from Alexandria’s award-winning Port City Brewing Company and holiday music and giveaways from 97.1 WASH-FM. Take part in hands-on activities from independently owned Alexandria businesses including a Letters to Santa postcard station from paper goods boutique Penny Post, holiday ornament craft from AR Workshop Alexandria and bookmark making with Old Town Books. Enjoy savory meatballs from Pizzeria Paradiso and a hot chocolate bar from Dolci Gelati. On the Alexandria City Marina, Riverside Taco Company presents a Parade Day Patio Party with hot cider and bottomless bites included in admission. At 3:30 p.m., Santa and Mrs. Claus will arrive by fireboat at the Alexandria City Marina to take photos with children and families at the annual Torpedo Factory Art Center Holiday Festival. The Alexandria Holiday Boat Parade of Lights is part of Alexandria’s biggest holiday weekend which also features events of the Campagna Center’s 49th Annual Scottish Christmas Walk Weekend.
The Wharf presents The District’s Holiday Boat Parade, a magical night of boating on the Potomac River, from Hains Point to the docks and piers of The Wharf. This is the 28th year of this annual waterfront holiday tradition. Free public activities will be held from 6 to 9 p.m., including photographs with Santa Claus, ornament decorating, and a live performance by Go Go Gadjet on District Pier. The boat parade will kick off at 7 p.m. and will conclude with a stunning holiday fireworks finale at 8 p.m. The festive holiday boat parade will include up to 60 beautifully decorated boats. Tommy McFLY of The Tommy Show! will serve as the parade’s Master of Ceremonies. Attendees will enjoy the free photobooth, a balloon artist, and sipping hot cocoa and making s’mores at The Wharf’s roaring fire pit. ABOUT THE WHARF
The Wharf is a remarkable waterfront neighborhood that reestablished Washington, DC as a true waterfront city when the first phase opened in 2017. With residential, office, hotel, retail, cultural, marina, music and public uses including waterfront parks, promenades, piers, and docks, The Wharf stretches nearly one mile, across 24 acres of land and 50 acres of water from the Municipal Fish Market to Fort McNair. Located between the National Mall and the Potomac River, The Wharf has increased local and regional connectivity with a new water taxi system, the free Southwest Neighborhood Shuttle, and new bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure.
The second phase of the development is under construction and will be completed in 2022. The Wharf development team is led by Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (a partnership between Hoffman & Associates and Madison Marquette) and also includes ER Bacon Development, City Partners, Paramount Development and Triden Development.
