The Alexandria Fire Department is partnering with the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) for a yearlong campaign to increase child literacy in Alexandria. A kickoff for the program, called “Read Across Alexandria,” will be held Tuesday, November 15 at 8 a.m., at Cora Kelly Elementary School, 3600 Commonwealth Ave. At the event, Fire Chief Robert Dubé will sign a partnership agreement in the presence of ACPS students and staff, and members of the Fire Department. Firefighters will also be on hand to read to the students.

The goals of the Read Across Alexandria Literacy Program are not only to engage youth and improve their reading skills, but also help raise their knowledge about the importance of preparedness. Each month throughout the school year the Fire Department will visit a different elementary school to read to students, provide education about fire prevention, and serve as positive role models.
