Annual Spring Artfest Week at Fort Smith Park in Arlington ArtFest Week (March 16-23, 2018) Presented by the Arlington Artists Alliance at Fort C.F. Smith Park 2411 24th Street North, Arlington, VA 22207 Friday, March 16, 6-8pm – Opening Reception Saturday, March 17, 10am-5pm Sunday, March 18, Noon-5pm Tuesday-Thursday, March 20-22, Noon-4pm Friday, March 23, 10am-Noon The 15th annual ArtFest Week is almost here! Our community is invited to take part in this popular week-long celebration of Art in Arlington. Highlights include an art show and sale featuring the works of 35 Arlington-based artists, in paintings of many genres, ceramics, sculpture, artists cards, and unframed works. Full schedule available on www.arlingtonartistsalliance.org Free and open to the public. The Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 16 from 6-8pm, and events will take place throughout the week. Meet the artists and enjoy light refreshments in the historic 1902 Hendry House. FREE workshops through this artful week include the following: Saturday, March 17 11am: Add Zest to Your Watercolor Work with Brusho. In this hands on workshop led by Judy Isaacs, work with dried crystals that spread when water is applied. Participants will have an opportunity to experiment with crystals that give a burst of color and texture when applied with watercolor. A variety of papers (including yupo) will be available to experiment with. FREE! 2pm: Working with Oil Bars on Stone Paper. Oil bars and stone paper are made for each other. The bars slide so smoothly that you draw and paint at the same time. During this demonstration watch as Jackie Afram creates the beginning of a landscape or still life. FREE! Sunday, March 18 12 noon: Paint Your Favorite Animal Artist Gerda Lane will lead this hands-on activity where kids trace and paint their favorite animal in watercolor or crayons. Kids will create artwork to take home and share with families. All materials provided. Ages: Families Welcomed. FREE! 1:30 pm: Introduction to Sumi-e Watch Carol Waite as she demonstrates the timeless art of oriental brush painting on rice paper. Participants may bring their own materials and join in. 1:30 pm: Civil War “Treasure Hunt” Elementary school aged children accompanied by an adult will search for answers to historical Civil War questions about Arlington, Fort CF Smith and Washington, DC. Clues are found on the grounds of the Fort CF Smith property. A “Treasure” will be provided to successful participants along with refreshments! Led by Todd Parker, meet at the front door of the Hendry House. FREE! 3:00 pm: Historic Photographic Processes and the Cyanotype Photography, as we know it, has been around since 1839, and has evolved from salted papers to computer generated prints. Learn from Liz Vance about some early photographic processes, and how to create your own cyanotype. Cyanotype kits will be available for purchase. Ages: All ages welcome, children under 8 must have an adult present. Tuesday, March 20 2- 3:30 pm: Chalk and Brush Lettering Demonstration Join artist Mary Jennings and learn how to create beautiful hand lettered art, signage and notecards. FREE! Thursday, March 22 2 – 4:00 pm Canvas Floor Cloth Painting Floor-cloth Making (Painted Canvas Floor Covering). Watch as Mary Jennings demonstrates the design process, execution and finishing of a hand-painted rug. These long lasting types of floor coverings are a great way to add a unique flare and protective covering to your floor.
