TRAFFIC ALERT: Walk for Peace

ARLINGTON, VA. – Buddhist monks participating in the Walk for Peace pilgrimage from Fort Worth, Texas, to Washington, D.C. are expected to pass through Arlington County on Monday, February 9 and Tuesday, February 10. The Arlington County Police Department will conduct rolling road closures along their walking route to ensure safety of the participants and spectators. Traffic along the route will be impacted and motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and seek alternate travel routes.

Spectator Reminders

Spectators are asked to quietly line streets along the route.
Do not walk behind or follow the monks for safety reasons.
Stay out of roadways and avoid obstructing traffic.
Do not attempt to touch, approach or step in front of the monks.
Always maintain a respectful distance and please allow the monks to initiate any interaction.
Follow all instructions and guidance from law enforcement and event coordinators.
The monks have everything they need for their pilgrimage, including food, shoes, supplies and other necessities. They are not accepting material donations at this time.
Routes

Monday, February 9 – Expected arrival in the early afternoon. Official time is dependent on their progress and well-being.

Depart Alexandria and enter Arlington County along Route 1
Right onto Crystal Drive
Crystal Drive becomes 12th Street S.
Right onto Army Navy Drive
Right onto S. Joyce Street
Left onto Columbia Pike
Right onto Washington Boulevard
Right onto N. Glebe Road
End at Marymount University – Upon arrival, there will be short welcoming remarks from Marymount University President Irma Becerra, followed by brief remarks from the monks. Members of the general public may stand in front of the Administration Building (Rixey Mansion) to watch and listen to the short welcome. The remarks are expected to last approximately 5–10 minutes. After the remarks conclude, no additional public events are planned.
For the safety of spectators, we ask that you do not line the route on Monday at the following locations:

S. Joyce Street from Army Navy Drive to Columbia Pike
Columbia Pike from S. Joyce Street to Washington Boulevard
Washington Boulevard from Columbia Pike to N. Pershing Drive
Tuesday, February 10 – Expected to begin at 7 a.m.

Depart Marymount University – No public event scheduled at Marymount University
Right onto N. Glebe Road
Right onto Chain Bridge Road
Exit Arlington County
For the safety of spectators, we ask that you do not line the route on Tuesday at the following location:

N. Glebe Road from N. River Street to Chain Bridge Road
