City Hosts Navigator to Assist with Health Insurance Open Enrollment and Urges ACA Enrollees Eligible for Medicaid Expansion to Enroll in Medicaid

For Immediate Release: October 31, 2018

The City of Alexandria urges residents interested in obtaining insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to sign up by December 15. The annual open enrollment period is from November 1 to December 15.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA), frequently referred to as “Obamacare,” provides consumers with subsidies that lower the cost of health insurance for low-income households. Anyone who needs coverage for 2019 should visit HealthCare.Gov to start an application and shop for plans that will take effect as early as January 1, 2019.

The City will be hosting a trained “Navigator” every Monday morning, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., until December 10, at Alexandria’s Department of Community and Human Services (2525 Mt. Vernon Ave.). An appointment is required to speak with a Navigator and should be scheduled as soon as possible, as this year’s enrollment period is shorter than in previous years. Call 703.647.4748 or visit enrollva.org to schedule an appointment, or for assistance with enrollment.

Additionally, persons currently covered by ACA should be aware that if they qualify for the newly expanded Medicaid coverage and choose to enroll in ACA instead, they will lose their ACA subsidy and will be charged the full premium for their insurance at the next renewal. Each recipient of ACA coverage should have a Medicaid eligibility screening or application to determine which option is best. Enrollment for the new Medicaid coverage begins November 1. Coverage begins January 1, 2019.
