Marilyn Funseth, 82, a Foreign Service spouse and former State Department Aide died February 27, 2015 at the Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington of respiratory failure. She is survived by her husband Robert of 58 years (married March 23, 1957), a 40-year career Foreign Service Officer. Robert was Spokesman of the State Department during the tenure of Secretary of State Henry Kissinger. She was predeceased by her only child, a son, Eric Christian Funseth, who died in 1984 at 23 years.

Mrs. Funseth was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 8, 1933. She is a graduate of the Hockaday School in Dallas, Texas, attended Randolph-Macon Women’s College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and graduated from the University of Oklahoma. Her first position at the State Department was in the Operations Center followed by an assignment as an Executive Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State, Ambassador Loy W. Henderson.

The Funseth’s first post was at the American Embassy in Beirut, Lebanon. They also served at the Consulate General in Bordeaux, France and at the Embassy in Ottawa, Canada. As a Foreign Service Officer spouse, Mrs. Funseth served and represented our country with distinction and dignity.

Mrs. Funseth is also survived by cousins Martha Moody (John) and John C. Estes; in-laws Denis and Linda Funseth and Helen Schuelke; nieces Sarah Baran (Todd) and Mary Demler (Kevin); nephews John Funseth (Lisa), Karl Funseth (Elizabeth), Richard Schuelke, David Schuelke (Mary) and Guy Schuelke (Paula).

Mrs. Funseth was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayette Square, DACOR (Diplomat and Consular Officers Retired), and the Pi Beta Phi Fraternity.

A memorial service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Lafayette Square, Washington, DC, on Saturday March 21, 2015 at 11:00 AM. In Marilyn’s honor, contributions may be made in her name to St. John’s Church, 1525 H Street, N.W., Washington, DC 2005-1098 or to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), 3803 North Fairfax Drive, Suite 100, Arlington, VA 2003, or a charity of choice.
