Deadline to Register or Update Virginia Voter Registration is May 21

The deadline to register to vote in Virginia’s June 12 Democratic or Republican primary election is Monday, May 21.

In Alexandria, the Democratic primary is being held to nominate Democratic candidates for Alexandria Mayor and City Council; the Republican primary is being to held to nominate a Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate. All persons qualified to vote may request a ballot for either primary; however, they may not vote in both primaries ( Virginia Code 24.2-530).

Checking Registration
If you have recently moved or updated your registration since the last time you voted, please make sure you are registered at your current address. You may check your registration at vote.elections.virginia.gov or by contacting voters@alexandriava.gov or by calling 703.746.4050.

New Registrations
The following voter registration methods are available to U.S. citizens living in Virginia who will be 18 or older by November 6, 2018:

Submit the application online at vote.elections.virginia.gov by midnight on May 21.

Register in person at the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, by 5 p.m. on May 21.

Download an application at alexandriava.gov/Elections and then print, sign and mail the completed form to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections, 132 North Royal St., Suite 100, Alexandria, VA 22314. Applications must be postmarked on or before May 21.

Address Updates
The same deadlines are in effect for Virginia voters who are registered, but have moved within the City of Alexandria, or moved within Virginia. Voters who do not update their registration records before the deadline are at risk of being ineligible to vote in this election.

Virginia registered voters who need to update their addresses may do so using any of the methods listed above, or by completing a new voter registration application and faxing it to the Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 703.838.6449 by 5 p.m. on May 21.

Voter information letters for new or transferred registrants will be mailed within one week of the registration date.

Absentee Voting and Other Election Information
Virginians who are registered to vote must show photo identification when voting. Check alexandriava.gov/Elections, or call 703.746.4050 for a list of acceptable photo identification and other election information, including sample ballots and in-person absentee voting hours. In-person absentee voting for this election continues until 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 9.

Absentee Voting — In Person
In-person absentee voting for the June 12, 2018 Primary Election began on Friday, April 27 and continues through Saturday, June 9. You may complete your application when you come to vote.

Virginia’s photo ID requirements apply to absentee voters who cast their absentee ballot in person. Voters who do not have acceptable ID may apply for an ID (and receive a temporary ID) at the same time they come to cast their in-person absentee ballot.

In-person absentee voting hours and locations are as follows:

Opened for absentee voting on Friday, April 27.

Regular hours:
Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (closed Monday, May 28)

Extended hours:
Tuesday, May 29 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 2 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Tuesday, June 5 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Wednesday, June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Thursday, June 7 from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
Saturday, June 9 from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Beatley Library 5005 Duke Street
Beatley Library will not be open for absentee voting for the June Primary (it will be open for the November General Election).
